Events April - Songkhran/Thai New Year - Pictures At the height of the hot season, splashing water from passing trucks, or roadside groups, is popular among young people. Originally, it was a time to visit elders and bless them with a sprinkling of water. May - Rocket Festivals - Bun Bang Fai - Pictures Local villagers make their own rockets from bamboo or other material, and launch them into the air to call the rain, and to celebrate the start of the rainy season. July - Ubon Candle Festival - Pictures Khao Phansa is the traditional time of year for young men to enter the monk hood for the rainy season, and for all monks to station themselves in a monastery for 3 months. In the north east celebrated with a candle festival, and best seen in Ubon Ratchathani. November - Loy Krathong - Full moon - Pictures Colorful handmade krathongs with candles are floated on the river, to bring good luck. November - Surin Elephant Round Up - Pictures Held on the third weekend of November, Thailand's biggest elephant show is very popular with both tourists and locals.
